The health authorities in St. Lucia have confirmed the presence of the Omicron variant of (COVID-19) in the country, and that it may be the dominant variant circulating during the current fifth wave of the virus.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health said the Omicron variant had been detected from the results of tests undertaken by the Trinidad & Tobago based Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).
The Omicron variant was confirmed in 13 of the samples sequenced and one case of the Delta variant.
Of the 13 cases of Omicron diagnosed, 11 are nationals and two are non- nationals.
