Opposition concerned about spike in coronavirus cases

Concern has been raised by the Parliamentary Opposition about the spike in coronavirus cases in Jamaica.

Reports from the Ministry of Health and Wellness on Sunday and Monday, show a total of 35 people were diagnosed with the highly contagious respiratory illness.

Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Morais Guy has described the increase as worrying.

In a news release Tuesday, Dr. Guy said with a backlog of 10,000 test results, it is uncertain as to the true level of community spread and every Jamaican must  ensure their own safety as the number of cases increases.

With persons from Florida accounting for the bulk of incoming passengers to Jamaica, and that state now the new epicentre for the virus outbreak in the US, Dr. Guy said established measures to guard against the disease must be maintained.

He wants passengers arriving from Florida carefully screened and tested.
