Dr. Radcliffe Goulbourne, Registrar of the Pharmacy Council of Jamaica
The Pharmacy Council of Jamaica is asserting that the practice of registered pharmacies selling unregulated drugs is not widespread in the industry.
The comment by Dr. Radcliffe Goulbourne, the council's registrar, follows an announcement by the police that they will be clamping down on pharmacies in breach of regulations following a raid at an establishment in the Corporate Area on Thursday.
Dr. Goldbourne said the council carries out regular unannounced inspections of each registered pharmacy each year and "the majority of the pharmacies...are operating within the confines of the law."
However, he noted that reports of even one rogue pharmacy can tarnish the reputation of the entire industry.
Dr. Goulbourne said in cases where pharmacies are found in breach, they can be removed from the list of registered pharmacies and fined up to $1 million under the Pharmacy Act.
Four employees of a popular pharmacy in downtown Kingston were arrested Thursday by detectives from the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC) after they were allegedly found to be selling drugs to induce abortion.
They were, however, released after being questioned.
The police say further investigations are being conducted.
