Police Commissioner defends JCF members amid INDECOM report showing rise in police fatal shootings

Major General Antony Anderson

Major General Antony Anderson, Commissioner of Police, has come to the defence of members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force concerning fatal police shootings.

He was responding to a report by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which shows a 25 per cent increase in the number of civilians killed by members of the security forces compared to last year.

General Anderson noted that charges are rarely recommended by INDECOM in a majority of fatal police shootings.

"So, you're talking about 100-plus cases and charges are recommended in five or four or six - very low numbers. And I think this is a discussion, 'cause it nests in a broader discussion that has to happen in Jamaica. What is the measure of the force's behaviour? How they should react, or whether they're reacting properly or not, is more reflective of how many improper shootings, unjustified shootings there are. That's on us, and we need to take that on board all the time. One is too many, if it's an unjustified shooting," he admitted.
