The Police High Command has ordered an investigation into a viral video in which a man was badly beaten by other detainees at the Ocho Rios lock-up in St. Ann.
The incident occured Thursday night.
The injured detainee has been hospitalised under police guard.
In a video, which appears to have been created by the detainees, they are seen stomping and torturing the man.
The injured man, who was bleeding from the head, appeared to be in a semi conscious state as the other detainees lit pieces of paper and other material, throwing it at him in an apparent attempt to set him ablaze.
The video did not show any police personnel manning the lock-up.
A senior officer told Radio Jamaica News that force policy clearly states that the lock-ups must be checked hourly throughout the night.
It's understood that the police conducted a search of the cells today following the release of the viral video.
The Independent Commission of investigations (INDECOM) and the Inspectorate unit will be probing the incident.
