Portland fisherman convicted for drug trafficking

One of three fishermen arrested in a major anti-narcotics operation off the coast of St. Thomas last year has been convicted for drug trafficking.

Miguel Orr, 45, of Manchioneal in Portland, was fined four million dollars or eight months in prison when he appeared before the St. Thomas Parish Court on Thursday.

The other two fishermen were admonished and discharged by the court.

On November 18, the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard intercepted a vessel with the three fishermen aboard off the coast of Morant Point.

The Coast Guard found 1,000 pounds of compressed ganja on the vessel.

The men were later handed over to the narcotics police.
