There is outrage among the church community following Monday's murder of a Portmore-based pastor outside his house in Three North.

He is Reverend Lynval Lewis, who led the Greater Portmore Tabernacle.

President of the Jamaica Evangelical Alliance, Bishop Dr. Alvin Bailey, said the church community is shocked that Reverend Lewis was targeted in this manner.

"We are disturbed and further shocked that such an incident could have taken place in Jamaica in spite of the increase in crime and violence. And so, we want to extend our condolences to the family of our brother and to the church family," he said.

The police say the pastor was reversing from his car porch about 11:00 a.m., when a gunman walked up and shot him in the head.

He reportedly lost control of the vehicle which crashed into a concrete wall.

Reverend Lewis was transported to hospital by a passerby, then transferred to another corporate area facility, where he died while undergoing treatment.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, acting head of the St. Catherine South Police Division, said no motive has been established for the shooting.

Superintendent Nicholson noted that the area in which the incident took place is usually well-populated. He urged people who may have witnessed the shooting to tell the police what they know.

Members of the Community Safety and Security Branch on Tuesday visited with the family of Reverend Lewis in a show of support.

Deputy Superintendent Paulette Baker, Territorial Officer for the St. Catherine South Police, said the team will continue to provide support and counselling to the family and community.
