Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has urged residents of Portmore to hold their elected representatives to account.

Mr. McKenzie says the political representatives are there to serve the interests of the people.

He has urged the residents to use the facilities at the newly opened Portmore City Municipality building to raise issues that affect their communities.

"Engage your elected representatives. Seek answers to questions and demand from your elected representatives service that you elected them to provide for you. This is not going to be a building that is here to accommodate anything outside of service. It is your tax dollar that has built this facility," he pointed out.

In the meantime, Minister McKenzie said St. Thomas and St. Ann are also to receive new buildings to house the administrative functions of the municipal corporations.

"By early next year, the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation will be moving into a brand new state-of-the-art facility at the Goodyear complex. And we have now commenced the negotiations for the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation so that they can have a proper structure," he anounced.

Mr. McKenzie was speaking at the official opening of the Portmore City Municipality building on Monday.
