The vaccination of prisoners against COVID-19 has started.
The Ministry of National Security on Monday disclosed that 86 inmates received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Friday.
The group comprised 81 inmates from the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre and five from the South Camp Adult Correctional Centre.
Carla Gullotta, Executive Director of the human rights advocacy group Stand Up For Jamaica, said the vaccination programme is timely in light of the poor conditions at the island's penal facilities.
She noted that the inmates are "in an environment where social distancing cannot be respected [and] it's very difficult to keep all those rules and regulations which are required to keep safe."
She is hoping all inmates will take the vaccine.
