Public health expert suggests halt of mass vaccination until more vaccine doses secured

Alverston Bailey, Associate Professor at the School of Public Health at UTech and Opposition Spokesperson on Health Dr. Morais Guy

Alverston Bailey, Associate Professor at the School of Public Health at UTech, has suggested that the COVID-19 vaccination blitz be halted until there is a steady supply of the medication through the COVAX Facility.

Professor Bailey said the remaining doses should be reserved for the full immunisation of frontline workers.

"I'm terribly concerned that if we do not get enough vaccines or if we use up all the vaccine now in the national blitz, many frontline workers would not have the second dose and they will be partially immunised, and since they are on the battlefield they must be immunised," he contended Tuesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.

But Opposition Spokesperson on Health Dr. Morais Guy believes the Government should not suspend the mass vaccination of Jamaicans despite the uncertainty surrounding the next shipment of vaccines.

He said information from the UK indicates that "if you delay the dose of the second vaccination to about 12-13 weeks, you get a better coverage in terms of overall immunity," so that could buy Jamaica more time.

He added that India's halt on exports is temporary, but even so, there are other places from which the AstraZeneca vaccine can be procured.

The Ministry of Health started the vaccination blitz last Saturday at the National Arena.

Another blitz is scheduled for this Saturday.
