St. Catherine Parish Development Committee calls for environmental court

By Halshane Burke

Vice Chairman of the St. Catherine Parish Development Committee, Kestonard Gordon, is calling for appropriate measures to be implemented, to deal with environmental breaches.

This comes on the heels of the latest environmental incident in the Rio Cobre which resulted in another fish kill.

Among the measures envisaged, Mr. Gordon says a dedicated environmental court would help to fast-track the process of redress and prevent long trial delays, such as in the case involving Windalco and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).

"It is not in public interest that these trials are so long and drawn out and justice is not served when the people have been waiting for so long and they have been frustrated by all kinds of strategies," he lamented.

NEPA has theorised that heavy rains over the weekend may have resulted in storm water run-off depositing a contaminant into the Rio Cobre.
