JRA Secretary Michael Wilkinson
A new president of the Jamaica Rifle Association (JRA) will be elected on Thursday.
This was confirmed by JRA Secretary Michael Wilkinson, who said a special general meeting has been called for 6 o'clock Thursday evening for the association's membership to vote.
The development follows the resignation of JRA president Major John Nelson, resulting in a hastily called management committee meeting on Wednesday.
Immediately following Major Nelson's resignation, it was announced that First Vice President Rohan Wilson will serve as the interim president of the JRA.
Major Nelson's resignation came Wednesday as the JRA was thrust into the spotlight following news that the dealer's licence he held was revoked by the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA).
This effectively means, currently, the JRA cannot sell firearms or ammunition - a development that will affect the sport of shooting in Jamaica as the JRA imports tax free and has cheaper firearms than market prices.
The FLA's action follows an investigation into an attempted sale of a 7.62 calibre rifle brought into the island by a Canadian for a shooting competition last October.
It's reported that a member of the JRA became interested in the weapon and sought to purchase it.
The firearm was left at the storage facility of the JRA.
It's further understood that the JRA sought information from the FLA on how a sale could be completed.
But the FLA immediately seized the weapon as it was to have left the island with its owner.
It's understood that the FLA would have to issue what is called a 'disposal permit' for such a sale to take place and arrangements would have had to be made beforehand.
Radio Jamaica News understands that in addition to the revocation of the dealer's licence, there could be charges as the report could be sent to the Commissioner of Police for further investigation.
The authorities, including the FLA, have been tight-lipped about the development.
