The police have charged the Roman Catholic priest accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in Portmore, St. Catherine.
He is Lawrence Muvengi, priest of the St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, located at Christian Pen, Portmore.
Father Muvengi was charged Monday evening with having sexual intercourse with a person under 16 years old, sexual touching of a child, grievous sexual assault and abduction of a child fewer than 16 years.
It's alleged that the child, who is a member of the church, was befriended by Father Muvengi.
On March 19, he is alleged to have sexually assaulted her at his residence on the compound.
The incident was reported to the police on June 24 and an investigation launched.
Father Muvengi was on Monday pointed out during an identification parade.
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kingston says the priest has been removed from all active pastoral ministry pending the outcome of the investigation.
It's understood that a second person has been detained on allegations that he sexually assaulted the child.
In the meantime, Radio Jamaica News has been informed that King's Counsel Peter Champagnie has been approached by the family of the 12-year-old girl to seek a fiat to prosecute.
The application, done through the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, is to allow Mr. Champagnie to prosecute the case on behalf of the family.
