Roof of Shoppers Fair in May Pen collapses

Pandemonium struck in a section of May Pen, Clarendon when the roof of the Shoppers Fair Supermarket on Seven Roads caved in, forcing frightened employees and shoppers to scamper for cover.

The incident occurred about 2:30 this afternoon.

Police personnel were early on the scene to prevent potential looting  by a large group of bystanders who converged at the site.

Reports are that a cashier who was inside the supermarket at the time the roof caved in, and who was partially trapped by the rubble,  sustained minor injuries.

The employee was injured after supermarket goods reportedly fell on her.

A manager also reportedly fainted and was forced to seek medical attention.

She also escaped with minor injuries.

It's not yet clear what  caused the damage to the roof of the supermarket, however shoppers says an early afternoon thunderstorm resulted in major flooding inside the establishment.

Up to late this  afternoon police personnel remained on the scene as firefighters combed the supermarket in search of customers who may have been trapped when the roof caved in.

Jamaica Public Service work crews were also on standby to repair damage to the electricity supply.

The supermarket remains closed to the public as workmen are  conducting temporary repairs to the collapsed roof.

Supermarket employees were unable to determine if the doors will be re-opened tomorrow to the public.
