On January 18, 2018 Sarah Newland Martin spoke with Earl Moxam on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap about aspects of her work at the YMCA
Sarah Newland Martin, champion of the disabled, and a paralympian has died.
She passed away in hospital Wednesday morning.
Sarah Newland Martin, inspired in part by her own experience, spent most of her life to raising awareness and providing education about disabilities and wa a determined advocate for their causes.
She took that commitment to her church involvement as well, serving as chair of the Ministry to Persons with Disabilities Committee at Bethel Baptist Church.
She was also instrumental in a recent project of the Jamaica Baptist Union which produced a handbook: “Church of All and for All” which asserts the need for integration, inclusion and interaction with people with disabilities.
She took her mission on behalf of the disabled into the global community as well through her involvement with the Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network, under the auspices of the World Council of Churches.
For decades she was perhaps most widely known for her role as General Secretary of the YMCA, through which she reached out vulnerable groups, including street boys who engaged in the washing of car windows at busy street intersections.
By providing them with educational opportunities and life skills, the YMCA, under her leadership, made a significant difference in their lives.
In her earlier years the Name Sarah Newland Martin was widely known for her involvement in swimming and the Paralympic Games.
In 1965 she received the Jamaican Sportswoman of the Year Award for being the only woman with a disability to complete the ‘Across The Harbour’ swim meet, a 2 1/2 mile swim in Kingston Harbour.
