Security forces take action against curfew breaches

The security forces stepped up their enforcement activities under the COVID-19 curfew orders on Sunday, with more than 300 people being admonished for breaching the curfew in sections of St. Catherine, while other enforcement actions were taken against some.

Radio Jamaica News was informed that 443 vehicles were stopped during the operations and 156 of them were searched.

Thirty-three tickets were issued for breaches of the Road Traffic Act while three cars and a motorcycle were seized.

Seven offensive weapons and a small quantity of ganja were reportedly found.

Four persons were detained and taken to the Portmore Police Station to be processed.

Two of them will be questioned in connection with shootings, it’s understood.

The police and military security set up check points on the Hellshire main road in Portmore as well as Caymanas Bay and Old Harbour Bay following reports that scores of persons had gathered at various locations after the 3 pm curfew had taken effect.

Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, Communication Officer for the Jamaica Constabulary Force, told Radio Jamaica News that the security forces had responded, in part, to reports that “a number of persons were at the beaches and the river in Caymanas Bay.”

A tighter curfew has been imposed for the National Heroes weekend to restrict movement and gatherings in order to minimise the spread of COVID-19.
