Several Jamaican students leave Ukraine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says five of the Jamaican students who were in Ukraine have left the country amid the threat of conflict with Russia.

On Monday, Radio Jamaica News reported that some of the forty-two Jamaican students pursuing tertiary studies in the country were faced with a dilemma regarding continuation of their studies should they leave.

In a series of posts on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith said seven of the students requested help from the government to leave, but three are reconsidering.

She said the others are still considering their options.

Mrs Johnson Smith said the Jamaican Embassy has written to three universities in Ukraine, two of which confirmed they will allow online classes until April 1, while the third said it would consider adjustments.

However, she noted that there have been some signals of de-escalation of the threats and said the government continues to hope for diplomatic solutions.
