Small shipment of COVID-19 vaccines expected Monday

NHF Chairman Howard Mitchell

The government is expected to receive a small shipment of COVID-19 vaccines to arrive in Jamaica on Monday.

Howard Mitchell, Chairman of the National Health Fund (NHF), told Radio Jamaica News on Sunday that the shipment should finally arrive following several delays.

Monday's delivery should be followed by another shipment from Mexico "on or before Thursday of this week." he said.

Elaborating, Mr Mitchell projected that "by the end of this week, going into the new month I would expect that you would have somewhere between 40 to 60 thousand doses of vaccine available for distribution".

He added that arrangements have been made for a significant shipment of vaccine to arrive next month barring any more bureaucratic hurdle.

These would include deliveries directly from the United States and about 100,000 doses through the Covax facility.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness was forced to cancel its planned vaccine blitz on the weekend due to rising demand and chaotic scenes at its vaccination sites earlier in the week.
