Mayor of St. Ann's Bay, Sydney Stewart, is facing calls to resign.

Mr. Stewart has been coming under pressure recently, amid allegations of corruption.

During Thursday's meeting of the St. Ann Municipal Corporation, the minority leader, Winston Brown, demanded that Mr. Stewart step down by July 19.

He has accused the mayor of misleading the municipal corporation, citing a meeting which the mayor denied attending.

He and other People's National Party (PNP) councillors have also been seeking answers about how electricity at the Buckfield multi-purpose complex in Ocho Rios, St. Ann was connected illegally to the national grid and the lights at the facility stolen.

It's understood that this matter is now the subject of an investigation by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development.

Mr. Brown suggested that the mayor lied when he denied knowing about issues having to do with the "illegal planting of a light poll and the illegal installation of the light from JPS" at the Buckfield facility.

He said if Mr. Stewart does not resign, he will move a no confidence motion against him at the next sitting of the General Council of the Corporation.

The St. Ann Municipal Corporation is controlled by the Jamaica Labour Party, which has eleven members to the PNP's five councillors.

In order for the no confidence vote to go through, the minority leader will need the support of the JLP councillors.

But Mr. Brown appears hopeful he will get the support, as it is understood that two JLP councillors are in agreement that the mayor should resign.
