Strike averted at St. Ann’s Bay Hospital

A strike by unionised employees at the St. Ann's Bay Hospital has been averted, at least for now. This follows a meeting Monday evening involving the hospital's management and the National Workers Union (NWU). According to Howard Duncan, NWU’s vice president, an emergency response employee had his contract terminated two weeks ago under unfair circumstances. This left the other workers upset and resulted in a 72-hour ultimatum being served on the management of the hospital. It expired yesterday.

During Monday’s meeting the hospital requested a few days to hold consultations on the matter. Mr. Duncan said the NWU agreed to put protest plans on hold. He said based on the tone of the discussion, meaningful progress can be made.
