The Registrar General's Department will now operate under the management and control of the National Identification and Registration Authority - NIRA.
Under the new dispensation, the entity will be called the Office of the Registrar-General, with the National Identification component being added to its portfolio.
Bishop Conrad Pitkin, Chairman of NIRA, said the transition, first announced in April 2024, prioritizes both the interests of the Authority and those of the RGD staff, ultimately to the good of the public.
He said there will be comprehensive training and certification to equip staff with the skills needed to deliver enhanced National Identification and Civil Registration services.
There will also be a significant increase in service locations, he added, moving from the current 10 RGD locations to 24 NIRA service centres island-wide.
