Suriname vice president's bodyguards get suspended sentence for assaulting journalist

A Suriname court has imposed a three-month suspended sentence on three security officials of Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk after they were found guilty of assaulting journalist Jason Pinas, outside the National Assembly last December.

The three bodyguards on December 14 assaulted the journalist, who works for De Ware Tijd – the largest newspaper in Suriname.

He was knocked to the ground and his phone was also taken.

The court, while suspending the three month jail term for the three bodyguards, also imposed a three year probation on them and compensated Mr. Pinas.

The security guards were also ordered to apologise to the reporter.

Reacting to the ruling, Mr. Pinas said he is pleased with the decision.
