The Bahamas: 20 officers sent to TCI; opposition calls it 'disturbing'

Bahamas Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander said yesterday that roughly 20 officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force were sent to the Turks & Caicos Islands as part of a national security exercise that will assist The Bahamas in the long run.

However, Opposition Leader Michael Pintard said yesterday that sending "pivotal" officers to the British Overseas Territory at a time when The Bahamas is dealing with a spike in murders is "disturbing."

TCI Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting said the island experienced an "explosion of violence" last week after armed men killed two people, including an American tourist, and engaged in a shootout with officers.

On social media, some criticized the decision, questioning why the Bahamas was sending officers from New Providence, where murders are on the rise, to Turks & Caicos.
