Trinidad & Tobago's former health minister, Dr Fuad Khan, has filed nomination papers to challenge Opposition Leader, Kamla Persad Bissessar, for the leadership of the main opposition United National Congress (UNC).
Dr. Khan told reporters that he has filed papers as the party gears up for internal elections on June 26. He noted that he had flown to the US to attend a medical training course and hence had someone file the nomination papers on his behalf.
According to Dr. Khan, there is a growing consensus within the party that Persad-dual Bissessar's role as Opposition Leader in Parliament and party political leader has significantly weakened her ability to carry out these functions effectively.
Dr. Khan served as health minister in the 2010 to 2015 People's Partnership government.
Mrs. Persad Bissessar and several other UNC members, including opposition member Dr. Roodal Moonilal, yesterday filed their nomination papers for the internal elections.
