T&T health minister says developed countries hoarding monkeypox vaccines

Trinidad and Tobago's Health Minister has accused developed countries of hoarding vaccines to treat monkeypox.

Terrence Deyalsingh says the action is reminiscent of the situation that existed with the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines.

He is appealing for the monkeypox vaccine to be made available on a more equitable level to all countries.

There is no treatment specifically for monkeypox infections. But monkeypox and the smallpox virus are similar, therefore, antiviral drugs and vaccines developed to protect against smallpox may be used to prevent and treat monkeypox.

Trinidad and Tobago is seeking to secure anti-virals and the smallpox vaccine, Jynneos.
