More than 80% of JPS customers back on power grid

Halshane Burke reports

Roughly 83% of Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) customers across the island are said to now have electricity.

JPS says it has either delivered on or surpassed its projected December restoration targets.

Chief Executive Officer Hugh Grant says this is as a result of round-the-clock efforts by JPS teams and the additional line workers from overseas, supported by heightened partnerships with the Emergency Operations Centre across municipalities.

Last month, the commitment was made to restore 95% power to St. Mary and Portland by the first week of December, but that target has been surpassed with more than 96% of customers having electricity.

JPS had also promised that 75% of customers across Manchester, Clarendon and St. Ann would receive electricity by December 10. However, more than 80% of customers now have electricity.

St. Mary and Portland have joined Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine and St. Thomas as almost fully restored.

Mr. Grant says access challenges or issues unique to some customers' premises have delayed restoration across the remaining households in those parishes.

The restoration of power to the Montego Bay business district and the Elegant Corridor in St. James, Norman Manley Boulevard and West End in Negril, Falmouth Town and Pier in Trelawny and the Ocho Rios cruise ship pier and Dunn's River in St. Ann are among the major milestones.

Mr. Grant says the next phase of restoration will focus on rebuilding the network in the most badly affected western parishes, primarily in Westmoreland, Hanover and St. Elizabeth.
