Two shot dead at anti-violence seminar in Westmoreland

Superintendent Robert Gordon, head of the Westmoreland Police

Westmoreland, which was placed under a State of Public Emergency on Sunday, recorded a double killing on Tuesday when a gunman shot and killed two male participants who were attending an anti-violence training seminar.

The attack took place while the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)/ Peace Management Initiative gender-based violence seminar was being held at the Source Centre on Barracks Road in Savanna-la-Mar.

Superintendent Robert Gordon, head of the Westmoreland Police, told Radio Jamaica News that the double killing happened while participants in the seminar were having lunch.

The gunman reportedly walked to the back of the building where the participants were eating, then left and returned five minutes later. He opened fire, hitting the two young men.

Superintendent Gordon said the police do not yet have any information on the cause of the shooting, however, they are pursuing a person of interest.

He said there is no information to suggest that either of the victims was involved in crime.
