There is an urgent appeal from the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) for assistance from volunteers to ease a crisis caused by the shortage of nurses.
Radio Jamaica News has been informed that the nursing shortage has worsened as a number of staff members at the University Hospital have contracted COVID-19.
Dr. Kelvin Metalor, head of the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the hospital, on Tuesday afternoon told Radio Jamaica News the situation has been compounded by the spike in patient load.
"So all the COVID wards essentially are full, the intensive care unit is full, and there is a critical shortage of nursing staff to be able to attend to all of these patients. The nurses who have been attending to these patients have been doing so for the last one year...many of them have not been able to take any break and it's beginning to take a big toll on them," he lamented.
The hospital is calling for retired nurses and persons with nursing skills to contact it as soon as possible.
