The administration of Victoria Jubilee Hospital is reporting that the security guard was absent from his post at the time a newborn was reportedly abducted from the institution Wednesday morning.

The baby was found missing about 5 o'clock.

Elise Fairweather Blackwood, Director of Nursing Services at Victoria Jubilee, told RJR News two security guards were stationed at different points on the ward, however, when the nurse went to report that the child was missing, the guard at the exit was not at his post.

Colleen Wright, Chief Executive Officer of the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, explained that no mother is allowed to leave the facility with a baby unless she is in possession of a discharge slip which should coincide with the armbands on the mother and child.

"If you go to the security without your discharge slip, you cannot leave the hospital. You'll be sent back and you'll be given your discharge slip so you can leave," she revealed.

In addition, she said no one is usually discharged at that time in the morning when the baby was reported missing.

There was no closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera at the hospital at the time of the incident.

The hospital on Wednesday started preparations to have the cameras installed.

In the meantime, the Kingston West Police are seeking the public's help in locating the woman who took the one day old baby boy from the hospital.

The police say the woman is about five feet two inches tall, dark complexion and slim build with natural hair.

According to the police, between 4 and 5 o'clock Wednesday morning, the woman was seen by other patients, wandering around the ward looking at babies.

About five o'clock, the missing child's mother who gave birth Tuesday night, woke up and discovered that she was bleeding.

The woman offered assistance and encouraged her to go to the bathroom to clean up.

When she returned the woman and her baby were gone.

Inspector Phillip Dodd, crime officer for the Kingston West Police Division, told RJR News that investigators have interviewed security personnel at the hospital.

Inspector Dodd is urging persons with information on the missing baby or the woman to contact the West Kingston Police or the nearest police station.

This is the second time in less than a week that a child has been abducted at one of the island's hospitals.

Last Friday, a three week old child was abducted at the car park of  Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James.

The child was found two days later and the alleged abductor arrested.
