Ned Price, Spokesman for the US Department of State
The Joe Biden administration has confirmed that it recognises Claude Joseph as acting prime minister of Haiti.
Ariel Henry, who was appointed Prime Minister of Haiti on July 5, has contested the leadership of the acting prime minister following the killing of President Jovenel Moïse.
However, US State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters on Thursday that the US government continues to work with Mr. Joseph, since he "was the incumbent in the position [and] was serving as the acting prime minister before the assassination before President Moïse."
But Mr. Price emphasized the need for democratic elections in Haiti this year.
"We know ultimately that preserving Haiti's democratic institutions is key to restoring peace. The United States, the OAS, our partners in the region and beyond, we've consistently urged the Government of Haiti to organise free and fair presidential and legislative elections and we continue to urge Haitian government officials and political stakeholders to dialogue in the best interest of the Haitian people and to refrain from violence," he asserted.
