The resumption of classes at the state-run Vocational Training Development Institute (VTDI) on Gordon Town Road in St. Andrew has been delayed as scores of workers are still on strike.

Employees at the associated National Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) also remain off the job.

Classes were scheduled to resume on Sunday at the VTDI following the Christmas break, but the employees are insisting that they will not return to work until pay and contract issues are settled.

The workers have complained that the failure of the Ministry of Education to address the issues and finalise the transition of the institution has made it difficult for the management to attract new employees.

The workers were informed that they would be called to a meeting with the ministry soon, however, no date has been set.

When contacted on Sunday, Carolyn O'Connor, Jamaica Teachers' Association delegate for the VTDI, said the workers are continuing their sit-in "until we get word from the ministry of the meeting".

Similarly, Earl Samuels, the National Workers Union (NWU) delegate for the NCTVET, said employees at the entity are taking a hardline approach until the Education Ministry intervenes.

He hopes the permanent secretary and preferably Minister Fayval Williams will be present at the meeting.

The NCTVET workers complain that the transitioning of the agency from the HEART/NSTA Trust has left them in limbo.

It is reported that some of the workers have been on contract for more than 10 years without benefits.
