Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has sought to assure vendors that a renovated Yallahs Market will be ready for full occupation before Christmas.

The St. Thomas Municipal Corporation recently regained control of the market after having leased the facility for several years.

Minister McKenzie on Wednesday toured the market for the second time in as many weeks even as some 50 vendors began moving into the facility on Monday ahead of the renovation works.

The Local Government Minister said the rehabilitation of the market will begin without delay and will include input of the vendors "at every stage of the development".

"We are going to be facilitating the vendors in the market until we have completed the assessment and the budgeting for the renovation. During the period of the assessment and the renovation of the market, the vendors will not be asked to pay any market fees," the minister announced.

The facility has been in need of rehabilitation since 2016.

Mr. McKenzie blamed bureaucracy for the extended closure and delayed repairs.
