Suriname groups urge president to act on 1982 massacre convictions

Four organisations, including the trade union grouping, Trade Union C-47, and the Organisation for Justice and Peace in Suriname, have called for President Chandrikapersad Santokhi to do everything possible to ensure that those convicted of the murders of 15 men on December 8, 1982, be detained as soon as possible.

In an open letter to the president, the organisations said December 8 this year will mark 42 years since the 15 men, all advocates for democracy and the rule of law, were tortured and murdered in cold blood.

They noted that after years of struggle, the court on December 20 of last year sentenced those responsible for the killings to jail.

The organisations said this apparently unhindered and childishly simple flight, in the public eye, has seriously affected confidence in the rule of law and remains a stain on the Republic of Suriname.
