Dacres and Atkinson named 2018 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year

Fedrick Dacres and Alia Atkinson were named the 2018 National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year at the 58th staging of the RJRGLEANER Sports Foundation Awards Gala on Friday night at the Jamaica Pegasus. Just as she did in the pool all season, swim star Atkinson continued her record breaking form at the awards gala, walking away with 4 awards to be the toast on the night.

In addition to picking up back to back Sportswoman of the Year title, her third national accolade overall, Atkinson also received three additional awards on the night. The four time Olympian also received the Gleaner Iconic Award, the People's Choice Performance of the Year award for her world record swim in the FINA World Cup Series and the sectional prize for female swimmer of the year.

She became the first athlete to walk away with the top national title and the iconic as well as the People's Choice awards on the same night. Triple jumper Kimberly Williams and shot putter Danniel Thomas-Dodd  tied for the runner-up spot.

Commonwealth Games and NACAC champion Dacres stood head and shoulders above his contenders for the Sportsman of the Year title. Commonwealth games sprint hurdles champion Ronald Levy took the runner-up spot.

The other major awards on the night went to 16 year old Reggae Girl Jody Brown who took the Victoria mutual Y.O.U.T.H. Award and Jamaica Chess Federation president Ian Wilkinson who received the Chairman's Award.
