Jamaica's men's dicsus trio create history at Paris Olympics

Report by RJRGLEANER Group Sports Reporter Jordan Forte

It was a mixed bag for Jamaica, but the throwers and quarter-milers shone on day 5 of athletics at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Monday.

In a groundbreaking achievement, the discus final for men will feature three Jamaicans, as Traves Smikle 65.91, Ralford Mullings 65.18 and Roje Stona 65.32, are all in the top 12.

The nation won't have a finalist in the women’s 200m, as Lanae Tava Thomas and Niesha Burgher both finished 5th in their semi-finals.

On the men's side, both Bryan Levell and Andrew Hudson must contest the repechage round on Tuesday if they are to advance to the semis.

Levell's 20.47 saw him finish 4th in his heat, while Hudson's 20.53 also landed him in 4th.

Earlier, all three of the nation's men in the 400mh advanced to the semis. Malik James King won his heat commandingly in 48.21, Roshawn Clarke also topped his heat with 48.17 seconds, while Jaheel Hyde was second in his heat in 49.08.

It was a similar story in the women’s 400m, as Nickisha Pryce won her heat in 50.02, while Stacey-Ann Williams was second in a seasons best 50.16 and Junelle Bromfield third in 51.36 seconds.

In the meantime, Sean Bailey pulled up with an apparent injury in the 400m repechage, while Deandra Watkin did not start.

12 Jamaicans are down to compete across two disciplines - track and field and diving, as the hunt for medals continues on Tuesday.
