Leading trainer Anthony "Baba" Nunes and 3-time former champion jockey Dane Nelson were the toasts of Friday's opening day of the weekend racing carnival at Caymanas Park, as each came away with five winners on the 11-race card. Nunes who entered the day with a lead of $11 million in stakes earnings over reigning champion Wayne DaCosta,had victories courtesy of the even-money favourite Royal Approach in race 2; Latapy at 5-2 in the 7th event; Prince Charles at 3-1 in race 8; the 4-5 favourite Princess Ava in race 9 and closed out his 5-timer with the 2-1 chance Legality in the feature, Betting Gaming and Lotteries Stakes.
The 3 year old dark bay colt who came with a terrific stretch run to land the 7 furlong Overnight Allowance contest in a minute and 25 seconds flat, also closed out the 5-timer for nelson.
Nelson who was riding for the first time since returning from his latest stint on the Canadian circuit, also won aboard Missmyrtlerichiegirl, Royal Approach, Classy Vishala and Princess Ava. Inform apprentice Reyan Lewis also got among the winners with a triple while DaCosta had a double.
