Leading trainer Anthony "Baba" Nunes could create history by sweeping the first three places in the 99th running of the Boom Jamaica Derby over 12 furlongs on June 29 at Caymanas Park. Nunes has nominated seven runners for the blue ribband event including Guineas winners I Am Di One and Supreme Soul who also landed the Governor's Cup. The topline conditioner has also nominated Earn Your Stripes, Tricky One, Princess Ava, Envisaged and Big Bang.
“It’s not impossible but it’s extremely hard to do. I just want to win the Derby and see all my horses run well for their owners,” said Nunes. 18-time champion trainer Wayne DaCosta will be represented by Jamaica Oaks winner Princess Annie with Run Thatcher Run and Lady Blue not being entered. The Boom Jamaica Derby has a total purse of $8 million.
The prestigious event will form part of a weekend carnival of racing as the country's top Grade 1 horses will journey over a distance of ground in the feature event on Sunday, June 30. "We’ll be having the Viceroy Trophy which is a Grade 1 race over 9 furlongs where we expect the likes of Will In Charge and She’s A Maneater to renew their rivalry. We will be hoping that with those two races on the two days, 75 percent of those coming for the Derby will come back the Sunday,” said Chris Armond, Director of Racing at Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited.
