International Reggae Day celebrations set for today

Several countries around the world are marking International Reggae Day (IRD) on Friday, July 1.

Some 35 cities across the globe are staging various activities celebrating the genre of music born in Jamaica. Last year, 25 countries participated in the celebrations.

Although Friday is the official IRD, celebrations will run until Saturday.

Among the events planned for this year's celebration of IRD in Jamaica is the conference at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel's Portland Ballroom. This year's focus will be on the benefits of Kingston being designated a Creative City by UNESCO.

The Trench Town Experience and Clarendon Live will also take place Friiday night.

Other cities participating in this years celebrations include Honolulu, Hawaii, Beijing, China, Geneva, Switzerland, Auckland, and New Zealand.
