The Ministry of Agriculture says it will be conducting a rapid assessment of developments in the poultry supply chain, from the farm level to retail.
The Ministry says the assessment, which is expected to be completed within two weeks, will cover both the chicken and egg sectors. The findings will determine whether the current waiver on the importation of chicken and eggs will be extended, modified, or allowed to expire.
The move follows calls from industry players to halt imports, which were permitted in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
However, the Ministry maintains that local production remains insufficient to meet demand, noting that current output of between 3 and 3.1 kilogrammes per week falls short.
It also reports ongoing egg shortages in several western parishes, which have pushed prices up sharply—from about $15,000 per case to $21,000 per case.
