Educator calls for end to stigma against children with intellectual disabilities

Some schools serving children with intellectual disabilities continue to face stigma and name-calling, according to one educational leader.

The issue is being highlighted in eastern St Thomas, where the Ina Barclay Academy of Excellence is pushing back against what its acting principal describes as unfair and damaging labels.

Dr Jacqueline Hendricks says the school is sometimes dismissed as a "dunce school."

The Ina Barclay Academy caters to students with intellectual disabilities and other special needs. Dr Hendricks says the institution is focused on helping students develop practical skills, build confidence and become more independent.

“Firstly, the behavior for students is unmatched with any other high school, and I say that boldly and comfortably,” she asserted. 

Elaborating, she said the students at her school are “very lovely because we have assisted them to improve their self-worth. They know they're important. They know they're valuable. They know that at some point they will be able to contribute positively to society.”
