Dr. Omar Davies, Minister of Transport, Works and Housing, has commented on the recent decision by the US Department of Transportation to turn down a request from Fly Jamaica to offer nonstop service between New York and Georgetown, Guyana. A similar decision was made against Caribbean Airlines.
The Department said Caribbean Airlines and Fly Jamaica had not provided compelling evidence that the flights would be in the public interest. Dr. Davies said this is not expected to be a hurdle to plans by Fly Jamaica to expand its routes:
“I was more aware of the Fly Jamaica request they are seeking to tap in on. The travelers from Guyana have a very length circuitous route to North America and they were hoping to do a direct flight,” said Dr. Davies.
He said he believes Fly Jamaica still intends to a Georgetown to Kingston and then linking from Kingston to New York.
