Employers breaching NIS Act

According to the latest report of the Auditor-General, a large number of employers continue to breach the NIS Act.

Records revealed that just over 1,000 employers from eight parishes owed $279 million in NIS contributions.

One thousand 100 employers were also delinquent in filing annual returns for 1993 to 2006.

The Auditor-General said he was advised that the Ministry of Labour and Social Security had taken 300 employers to court.

Payment arrangements were made with 200 of the employers.

The audit also uncovered weaknesses in the disbursement of advances to the Post and Telecommunications Department to pay pension benefits.

The Auditor-General has recommended that the inadequacies be corrected to facilitate timely and accurate accounting.
