The Jamaica Agricultural
Society, (JAS), says it will this year establish a Micro Credit Revolving Loan
Scheme to support farmers.
The scheme will be seeded with $1 million earned from the proceeds of the Denbigh Agricultural Show held in August.
The funds will be made available only to fully paid up members of the JAS as well as the Jamaica 4-H Clubs.
President of the JAS, Senator Norman Grant, says for farmers to benefit from the scheme, they must present the JAS with income generating projects that can create opportunities within their communities.
He says the farmers will also have to provide products for that will be display at the upcoming Denbigh Show.
Individual applicants may qualify for loans ranging from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $25,000, while groups that qualify would get between $10,000 and $50,000.
Senator Grant added that the JAS will endorse individuals or groups that honour their loan arrangements.
Disbursements under the loan programme are due to begin in March.
