Mining Minister Audley Shaw
By Javaughn Keyes
Mining Minister Audley Shaw says limestone is to lead the country's bulk exports.
Speaking at an event to mark the second visit of a large bulk carrier for the mineral, Mr. Shaw said there is space for far more investment in limestone exports.
"Yes, oxide is going up. But here's an industry that has a growth capacity because God has been good to Jamaica. We have a very, very large, extensive reserve," he noted.
Mr. Shaw said there is scope for annual limestone exports to reach four million tonnes per year.
As at November 2022, the export of material in the 'other mining' category, in which limestone falls, increased by 71 per cent year over year.
Jamaica is estimated to have about 150 billion tonnes of limestone deposits, with about 50 billion considered recoverable.
