Local spice manufacturer faces export challenges due to shortage of key ingredients

A shortage of key inputs, such as scotch bonnet peppers and pimento, is hindering at least one local manufacturing company from filling export orders for its products.

CEO of Spur Tree Spices Jamaica Limited, Albery Bailey, says a series of weather-related events over the past two years have resulted in not enough of the raw materials being on the market.

He added that the passage of Hurricane Beryl seriously affected the source parishes for most of the supply.

Mr Bailey says the output of pimento has been trending downwards for years, resulting in the price moving from $550 to $700 per pound since the hurricane.

Spur Tree Spices uses about 25,000 pounds of pimento per year.
