Japanese conglomerate Marubeni has agreed to pay a 54-point-6 million US dollar criminal penalty to resolve charges related to its role in a bribery scandal.
Marubeni, through its Caribbean subsidiary, owns 40 percent of the Jamaica Public Service Company.The charges relate to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
According to the US Department of Justice's Criminal Division, Marubeni was hired as an agent by the four-company TSKJ joint venture to help it obtain engineering, procurement and construction contracts to build liquefied natural gas facilities on Bonny Island in Nigeria.
Marubeni offered to pay bribes to Nigerian government officials.
Under the terms of the deferred prosecution agreement, the Department of Justice agreed to defer prosecution of Marubeni for two years.
Marubeni agreed to retain a consultant for two years to review the design and implementation of its compliance program, to enhance it to ensure that it satisfies certain standards and cooperates with the department in ongoing investigations.If Marubeni abides by the terms of the deferred prosecution agreement, the Department of Justice will dismiss the criminal information when it expires.
