New paternity leave & family leave for adoptive parents take effect January 1

Paternity leave for fathers of newborns and family leave for adoptive parents bringing a new child into the home, will take effect January 1, 2023 for public sector employees.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance & the Public Service Marsha Smith, made the announcement on Tuesday.

Speaking at a Civil Service Week Public Forum, Ms. Smith also advised that the proposed increase of paid maternity leave from 40 days to three months will also start on January 1.

The changes are coming out of the current public sector compensation review and will be facilitated by updating the Public Sector Staff Orders of 2004.

Ms. Smith said the changes will ensure Jamaica is able to retain local talent.

The new leave arrangements were announced by Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke in July.
