RJRGLEANER Group continues NextGen TV buildout

The RJRGLEANER Communications Group says it continues to buildout its next generation television (NextGen TV) transmission.

Deputy CEO Dr. Claire Grant says the company is still within the US$7.5 million budget for the project.

"There was a main ring that's going to connect all the transmitters across the island. That's practically complete now. And so now we're moving into the next phase of beginning to put what is necessary in place to roll out the rest of the transmitters. Pretty soon we'll be selecting some areas and selecting some homes and to have people have experiences with the setup of the box and to see the signal. It is a very pretty signal to see," she said.

One of the world's best-selling consumer electronics brands, TCL, has joined ATSC 3.0 patent pool.

This means it will be incorporating this emerging standard into its televisions, so consumers will be able to buy sets which receive high-quality over-the-air TV broadcasts.

Dr. Grant said this is a significant announcement.

"The TCL brand is a little bit more appropriate for our market, in terms of mass, because of their price point. So that's a very, very exciting piece of news that we got."

In early 2022, Jamaica became the third country in the world to offer over the air next generation television.

The RJRGLEANER Group, which is Radio Jamaica's parent company, currently has two ATSC 3.0 transmitters, broadcasting high definition television signals for sister station Television Jamaica.
