Some tax revenue measures take effect today

Some of the revenue measures recently announced by Dr. Peter Phillips, Minister of Finance, take effect Friday, March 1.

All fees and taxes paid at the ports such as the Environmental Levy, Customs User Fee, Common External Tariff will be included as part of the General Consumption Tax (GCT) base.

This is expected to result in J$1.5 billion entering the government's coffers.

Another J$200 million is expected to be earned through an amendment to the legislation to account for the collection of GCT on the face value of prepaid phone vouchers.

The Ministry of Finance last month said this measure was aimed at increasing compliance by ensuring that the GCT collected by non-registered taxpayers is accounted for by telecommunication providers.

It said the measure should not result in an additional tax liability to consumers as it represents an administrative measure to correct an anomaly.

Also effective Friday, March 1, Telephone Call Tax will be included in the GCT base.
