Unemployment rate drops to 3.5% in October

There was a decline in the unemployment rate in Jamaica which moved from 3.6 per cent in July to 3.5 per cent in October last year.
 
This marks one of the lowest unemployment rates recorded, even as disparities between genders and age groups remain evident.
 
Meanwhile, the underemployment rate climbed to 5.10 per cent.
 
The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) is also reporting that the total labour force was 1.468 million, while the number of persons employed was 1.417 million.
 
The total number of unemployed persons was 51,300, with females making up 60 per cent of this figure.
 
Youths aged 15 to 24 years accounted for 41 per cent of the unemployed.
 
By gender, the unemployment rate for females was 4.5 per cent, notably higher than the 2.6 per cent recorded for males.
